There are a few simple steps you and your family can take to become better prepared for an emergency: buy an emergency kit or buy the supplies to make your own kit, make a plan and stay informed. Be sure to understand the storm related hazards, storm surges, flooding, bridge closures and how high wind will affect your home. Do you know which room in your home is the safest for you and your loved ones? Plan escape routes and a meeting place incase you are separated. Post emergency phone numbers that will be needed.

When preparing for a possible emergency situation, it's best to think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.

Recommended items to include in a basic emergency supply kit include:

* Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
* Food, a three-day supply of non-perishable food
* Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with extra batteries for both
* Flashlight and extra batteries
* First aid kit
* Whistle to signal for help
* Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
